Something Wrong With Your Bill? 5/9/2002
You may have heard about some customers receiving bills that seemed way out of sync from their normal billing. There can be any number of reasons for a high bill, so check out our Why is My Bill So High? fact sheet.
Seattle City Light sends out more than 2 million bills each year and we will make mistakes on some of those bills. But we're committed to fixing the problem and making the bill right. We owe that to the customer with whom we made a mistake, and we also owe it to all the other customers who have to pay for the electricity that we fail to bill. So, we work hard to get to the bottom of any bill problem.
If you think you have a problem, call us at 684-3000 during business hours as soon as you can. Here's what to expect when you pursue a bill complaint:
During the time you are working with us to sort out a disputed bill, your electricity will not be turned off. You may get a reminder notice, but you shouldn't get two of them. If you do, make sure to call us.
We don't assume that a disputed bill means that you did something wrong. It's just a problem that we're both trying to sort out. If you feel that you are not being treated right, ask to speak to a supervisor or write:

Most problems get solved within a few days. However, we may disagree on the cause of the problem. We have an independent hearing examiner who will schedule a meeting with you to work through your case. It may take a few weeks to get on the schedule, but don't worry. As long as you are working with us, your electricity will not be turned off.
At the end of our process, there will be a final settling up. We will work with you to come up with a payment plan that will not break your bank.
We understand that the recent rate increases are a real burden to you. If you have any problems in paying your electric bill, please talk to us as soon as you can. We have payment plans, rate assistance and other programs available that can help in a big way.
